Online Seminar with JICA

5月8日（木）英語村コミュニケーションスペースにてJICA海外協力隊隊員の方々と日吉ケ丘生とでオンライン交流会が催されました。

隊員の方々からモザンビーク共和国についての概要説明があり、その後、現地の現状―日常生活、食事、自然、学校教育、医療、そしてモザンビークと日本の文化交流についての詳細なお話がありました。一例をあげると、教育面の問題として、1クラスの生徒数が100人であったり、教室がなく雨が降れば休校になったり、ほぼ全員が裸足であったりと、日本では考えられない状況についていろいろ語られました。次に、現地での医療従事者、医療機器、薬剤の深刻な不足についての説明がありました。たとえ、救急搬送されても治療が十分に行えないという厳しい現状について切々と語られていました。また、剣道を通じての文化交流に尽力されている隊員のお話もありました。すべての説明にわかりやすい映像があり生徒達は小さくうなずきながら聞き入っていました。

その後、希望した生徒達とJICAの現役の隊員の方たちとの間でオンライン質疑応答タイムが設けられました。生徒達から次々と飛び出す熱心な質問の一つ一つに丁寧にお答えいただき、隊員の皆様ありがとうございました。そして、私たちは、この経験が生徒たちの地球規模の問題に対するより一層の興味につながり、日本の外の世界の理解を促進することを願っています。

On May 8th in HELLO Village’s Communication Space, an online
seminar was held between Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers for JICA currently working in Mozambique and Hiyoshigaoka High
School students.

After a brief introduction about the Republic of Mozambique, the
volunteers provided detailed explanations of the current conditions of the country, including everyday life, food, nature, education,
healthcare and the cultural exchange between Japan and
Mozambique. They also discussed issues such as overcrowded
classrooms in schools, where students are often barefoot and a
lack of suitable school buildings, which are hard to imagine in the
context of Japanese schools today. Another serious issue is medical care. In Mozambique, there are few medical practitioners, tools, or medicine for most hospitals. As a result, patients who are brought
to hospitals by ambulance cannot receive adequate treatment. One volunteer who has been working hard in the field of cultural
exchange through Kendo, shared his experience of promoting
mutual understanding.

Students listened intently to the presentation and saw photos and videos that helped them to picture the reality of living in
Mozambique.

Lastly, students eagerly participated and asked well-thought
questions in an online Q&A session. We would like to express
thanks to the volunteers for taking the time to answer their
questions, and we hope this experience will inspire more interest in global issues and deepen students’ understanding of life beyond
Japan.
